Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November in 2026, which means the party invitations are already going out. A Diwali party has a rhythm that a normal house party does not. It starts with the puja and the elders, moves through a long stretch of cards, food and chatter, and only turns into a dance floor somewhere around ten o'clock. A playlist that opens with a club banger at seven is as wrong as one that is still playing bhajans at midnight.
This list is built in the order of the evening. Each section is one phase of the night, and the songs in it are picked for how they land in a living room full of three generations, not for streaming numbers. We have kept the classics that every Diwali party in India runs on, added the 2024 and 2025 songs that have earned a place, and left out anything that only works in a nightclub. If you are planning a wedding sangeet instead, our guide to the best sangeet songs is organised the same way.
How to Build a Diwali Party Playlist
Most Diwali parties run five to six hours. The order that works, year after year, is this:
- Puja and arrivals: devotional and semi-devotional songs with a warm, festive sound. Low volume. Nobody is dancing yet.
- Cards and dinner: two hours of lounge-tempo songs that people can talk over. This is the phase most hosts get wrong by playing dance music too early.
- The dhol and garba block: the first songs that pull people off the sofa. Gujarati and Rajasthani-flavoured Bollywood works best here because everyone knows a few steps.
- The dance floor: the loudest, most familiar Bollywood hooks you have, in short edits.
- Closing: two or three sing-alongs to send people home happy.
Aim for 60 to 70 songs in total. The lounge section needs the most tracks because it runs longest. The dance section needs the fewest but the best.
Puja and Arrival Songs
These play while the diyas are being lit and the Lakshmi puja is finishing. You want festive, not sombre, and nothing with a heavy beat.
- Deva Shree Ganesha (Agneepath, 2012): Ajay-Atul's thunderous Ganesh anthem, sung by Ajay Gogavale, is the one devotional track that gets a room clapping. Play it as the puja ends.
Deva Shree Ganesha - Deva Deva (Brahmastra, 2022): Pritam and Arijit Singh wrote a song about light overcoming darkness, which is the entire point of Diwali. The orchestral build is perfect for the moment the diyas go on.
Deva Deva - Shubharambh (Kai Po Che, 2013): Amit Trivedi's Gujarati-flavoured celebration song, sung by Shruti Pathak and Divya Kumar. Bright, auspicious and gentle enough for the early evening.
Shubharambh - Aayi Hai Diwali (Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya, 2001): one of the very few Bollywood songs actually about Diwali. Himesh Reshammiya's tune is cheerful and the lyrics do the hosting for you.
Aayi Hai Diwali - Happy Diwali (Home Delivery, 2005): Vishal-Shekhar's festive number is the other genuine Diwali song in Hindi film music. Light, sweet, and the kids will know it from school functions.
Happy Diwali
Cards Night and Dinner: The Lounge Block
Taash parties are a Diwali institution, and the music during cards has one job: stay out of the way. Slow and mid-tempo songs with a modern sound, mostly recent, so the younger guests feel the playlist is theirs too.
- Husn (Anuv Jain, 2023): the independent hit that soundtracked every cafe in India for a year. Soft, melodic and endlessly repeatable.
Husn - Apna Bana Le (Bhediya, 2022): Sachin-Jigar and Arijit Singh at their warmest. Works at any volume.
Apna Bana Le - Sajni (Laapataa Ladies, 2024): Ram Sampath's folk-tinged ballad was one of the most streamed Hindi songs of 2024 and sits perfectly under conversation.
Sajni - Pehle Bhi Main (Animal, 2023): Vishal Mishra's piano ballad. Slow, cinematic and a favourite with guests in their twenties.
Pehle Bhi Main - Jhol (Maanu and Annural Khalid, Coke Studio Pakistan, 2024): the song of 2024 across the subcontinent. We ranked it among the best Coke Studio songs ever, and it is the one lounge track the whole room will hum.
Jhol - Lutt Putt Gaya (Dunki, 2023): Pritam and Arijit again, this time breezy and mid-tempo. A good bridge between the lounge block and the dancing.

The Dhol and Garba Block
Diwali comes only a few weeks after Navratri, so the garba steps are still fresh in everyone's legs. These are the songs that empty the sofas. Start them after dinner, when the plates have been cleared.
- Nagada Sang Dhol (Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, 2013): Shreya Ghoshal's garba showstopper is the single most reliable Diwali dance starter in the country. Everyone knows the clap pattern.
Nagada Sang Dhol - Dholida (Gangubai Kathiawadi, 2022): Sanjay Leela Bhansali's other garba epic. Slightly slower than Nagada Sang Dhol, which makes it a good first song for a mixed-age floor.
Dholida - Chogada (Loveyatri, 2018): Darshan Raval's dandiya pop hit. Built for a circle of people with sticks, but works just as well without them.
Chogada - Kamariya (Mitron, 2018): from the same team as Chogada and just as effective. Pair the two back to back.
Kamariya - Ghoomar (Padmaavat, 2018): the Rajasthani twirl. Shreya Ghoshal again, and the one garba-adjacent song that the aunties will lead rather than follow.
Ghoomar - Dhindhora Baje Re (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, 2023): Pritam's celebration anthem sung by Arijit Singh and Darshan Raval. It sounds like a festival, and the chorus is a shouted group sing-along.

The Bollywood Dance Floor
By now the lights are low and the people who said they would not dance are dancing. This is the block for the biggest hooks in Hindi film music. Keep every song to two or three minutes and let the energy carry.
- Badtameez Dil (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2013): thirteen years old and still the most dependable party opener in Bollywood. Benny Dayal's vocal never ages.
Badtameez Dil - London Thumakda (Queen, 2014): Amit Trivedi's brass-band wedding number, which has long since escaped weddings. Every family has a cousin who knows the whole choreography.
London Thumakda - Jai Jai Shivshankar (War, 2019): Vishal Dadlani and Benny Dayal, Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. Nothing on this list raises the volume in a room faster.
Jai Jai Shivshankar - Malhari (Bajirao Mastani, 2015): a victory song, which is exactly the mood of a Diwali night. The dhol section in the middle is where the room goes wild.
Malhari - Zinda Banda (Jawan, 2023): Anirudh's first big Hindi film number. Pure stadium energy.
Zinda Banda - Jhoome Jo Pathaan (Pathaan, 2023): Arijit Singh in party mode. The hook is simple enough that guests who do not speak Hindi still sing it.
Jhoome Jo Pathaan - Aayi Nai (Stree 2, 2024): Pawan Singh's crossover from Bhojpuri to mainstream Bollywood and the biggest dance song of 2024.
Aayi Nai - Tauba Tauba (Bad Newz, 2024): Karan Aujla's song started a dance trend on social media and has not left party playlists since. The step is easy, which is why it works.

The 2025 Hits
A Diwali playlist should feel current, and 2025 produced several songs that are already party fixtures. Slot these into the dance block rather than playing them as a separate section.
- Monica (Coolie, 2025): Anirudh's retro-disco number with Pooja Hegde on screen. The biggest South Indian crossover party song since Arabic Kuthu.
Monica - Pardesiya (Param Sundari, 2025): Sachin-Jigar brought Sonu Nigam back to the dance floor and the result was one of the most played songs of the second half of 2025.
Pardesiya - Shaky (Sanju Rathod, 2025): the Marathi song that went national through reels. Keep it for the moment the younger cousins take over the floor.
Shaky - Pal Pal (Afusic, 2025): the independent Punjabi hit of the year, mid-tempo and hypnotic. Good for the transition back towards the closers.

Regional Songs Every Diwali Party Needs
India does not celebrate Diwali in one language, and a playlist that is entirely Hindi tells half the room the party is not for them. One song from each of these makes a difference.
- Naatu Naatu (RRR, 2022): the Oscar-winning Telugu number. The hook step is the most famous piece of choreography of the decade.
Naatu Naatu - Arabic Kuthu (Beast, 2022): Anirudh and Jonita Gandhi. The Tamil party song that the whole country learnt.
Arabic Kuthu - Zingaat (Sairat, 2016): Ajay-Atul's Marathi floor-filler. Faster than almost anything else on this list, so place it near the peak.
Zingaat - Proper Patola (Namaste England, 2018): Diljit Dosanjh and Badshah. The Punjabi slot, and the song that gets the uncles up for one last dance.
Proper Patola
Closing Songs
End on warmth, not volume. Two or three songs that people sing with their arms around each other, then turn the lights up.
- Kesariya (Brahmastra, 2022): the final chorus is made for a room full of people singing together, and it fits the Diwali colour scheme too.
Kesariya - Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire, 2008): A. R. Rahman's Oscar winner is the most triumphant closing song in Indian music. We covered its place in his career in our ranking of A. R. Rahman's best albums.

Diwali Playlist Tips
- Keep the first two hours quiet. The most common Diwali party mistake is playing dance music while people are still at the puja or at the card table. Save it.
- Put the garba songs before the Bollywood bangers. Garba gets the elders dancing first, and once they are up, everyone else follows.
- Edit the dance songs down. Two and a half minutes each. Nobody needs the second verse of Malhari at eleven at night.
- Check your speaker for bass. Nagada Sang Dhol and Jai Jai Shivshankar sound thin on a small Bluetooth speaker. If that is all you have, turn the bass boost on and the volume down.
- Have the regional songs ready. A Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil or Punjabi song each tells a different part of the room that this Diwali is theirs.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali, the main Lakshmi Puja night, falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Dhanteras is on 6 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 November, so most parties happen over the weekend of 7 and 8 November.
What are the best Bollywood songs about Diwali itself?
There are surprisingly few. Aayi Hai Diwali from Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya and Happy Diwali from Home Delivery are the two genuine Diwali songs. Deva Deva from Brahmastra, with its theme of light over darkness, is the modern choice.
How many songs do I need for a Diwali party?
Around 60 to 70 for a five-hour party: roughly 25 lounge-tempo songs for cards and dinner, 15 to 20 for the garba and dance block, and a handful of devotional openers and sing-along closers.
Which songs get elders dancing at a Diwali party?
Garba and folk-flavoured songs work best: Nagada Sang Dhol, Dholida, Ghoomar and Chogada. Older Punjabi songs like Proper Patola also pull the uncles onto the floor reliably.
Should a Diwali party playlist include English songs?
One or two at most, and only in the lounge block. The dance floor at a Diwali party is Bollywood and regional territory, and English songs usually drop the energy.
