An Indian wedding is not one event but a week of them, and every ceremony has its own sound. The haldi wants warm folk songs in daylight. The sangeet wants choreographed dance numbers. The baraat wants dhol and Punjabi bhangra on the street. The bride entry wants two perfect minutes, and the vidaai wants the song that makes the whole family cry. One playlist cannot do all of that.
This guide is the starting point for the whole wedding cluster on MusicReprise. It walks through each ceremony in the order most north Indian weddings follow, explains what kind of music suits it, names the one song that defines it, and links to a full playlist with videos for every song. The wedding season reopens with Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November 2026 and runs until Kharmas in mid-December, then resumes after Makar Sankranti on 14 January 2027.
The Indian Wedding Week at a Glance
Every family and region does it differently, but a typical north Indian wedding runs over three to five days:
- Haldi: turmeric paste for the bride and groom, usually in the morning, at home. Music: folk-based, warm and gentle, then fun.
- Mehendi: henna for the bride and the women of the family, an afternoon or evening of music and dancing. Music: folk songs, Punjabi tracks and Bollywood dance songs.
- Sangeet: the big evening of performances, with choreographed dances by both families. Music: the biggest Bollywood dance numbers.
- Baraat: the groom's procession to the venue, on a horse or in a car, led by a band and dhol. Music: loud Punjabi and Bollywood party songs.
- Bride entry and varmala: the bride walks in and the couple exchange garlands. Music: slow, romantic and emotional.
- Pheras: the wedding ceremony itself around the sacred fire. Music: usually mantras and live shehnai, not recorded songs.
- Vidaai: the bride's farewell to her family. Music: quiet and deeply emotional.
Haldi Songs
The haldi is the most relaxed event of the week. Folk songs suit the ritual, and lively Bollywood songs take over once the turmeric is on and the cousins start dancing. Signature song: Sasural Genda Phool from Delhi-6 (2009), A.R. Rahman's adaptation of a Chhattisgarhi folk song, sung by Rekha Bhardwaj.
Sasural Genda PhoolAlso popular: Rangisari, Chaka Chak, Pallo Latke and Laal Ghaghra. Full playlist: 24 best haldi songs, including Punjabi maiyan songs, Bengali and Marathi picks and songs for the turmeric fight.
Mehendi Songs
The mehendi lasts for hours while the henna is applied, so it needs a long playlist that moves from traditional songs to modern dance tracks as the evening goes on. Signature song: Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), the song every Indian family associates with henna.
Mehndi Laga Ke RakhnaAlso popular: Mehendi Hai Rachnewali, Aaj Sajeya, Gud Naal Ishq Mitha and Kudmayi. Full playlist: best mehendi songs, organised from classic to modern.
Sangeet Songs
The sangeet is the night of performances. Each family prepares dances, and the music needs to be familiar, easy to choreograph and full of energy. Signature song: Gallan Goodiyaan from Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), a whole-family dance number made for a stage.
Gallan GoodiyaanAlso popular: Kala Chashma, London Thumakda, Nachde Ne Saare and Dilbaro for the emotional moment. Full playlist: best Bollywood sangeet songs, with picks for couples, parents and friends.
Baraat Songs
The baraat is the loudest part of the wedding: the groom's friends and family dance in the street in front of the band. Songs need a strong beat that works with a live dhol. Signature song: Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai from Aadmi Sadak Ka (1977), Mohammed Rafi's anthem for every groom's best friend.
Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi HaiAlso popular: Mundian To Bach Ke, Tunak Tunak Tun, Ainvayi Ainvayi and Tauba Tauba. Full playlist: best baraat songs, from band-baaja classics to Punjabi pop.
Bride Entry and Varmala Songs
The bride's entry is the most filmed moment of the wedding, and it lasts only two or three minutes, so the song needs to build to its best part as she reaches the stage. The varmala follows straight after. Signature song: Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), Salim-Sulaiman's song sung by Roop Kumar Rathod.
Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta HaiAlso popular: Din Shagna Da, Tum Kya Mile, Raanjhan and Deewani Mastani. Full playlist: best bride entry songs, with regal, romantic, Punjabi and fun options plus varmala songs.
Music for the Pheras
Most families keep recorded songs away from the pheras themselves. The priest leads the mantras, and if there is music it is usually a live shehnai or a soft instrumental between the rounds. If you book a shehnai player, ask them to stay on for the vidaai as well. For reference listening, Ustad Bismillah Khan's recordings remain the sound of the Indian wedding.
Vidaai Songs
The vidaai is the bride's farewell to her family, usually late at night or at dawn, and the most emotional moment of the week. The music should be quiet and chosen with the bride and her parents. Signature song: Babul Ki Duayen Leti Ja from Neel Kamal (1968), Mohammed Rafi's father's blessing to his daughter.
Babul Ki Duayen Leti JaAlso popular: Dilbaro, Chalo Re Doli Uthao Kahar, Laadki and Madhaniya. Full playlist: best vidaai songs, with a suggested running order for the farewell.
Planning the Music for the Whole Week
- Do not repeat the big songs. Agree which songs belong to which event. If a song is the sangeet finale, keep it out of the baraat playlist so it still feels special.
- Give each event an owner. The DJ usually handles the sangeet, baraat and reception. A cousin with a speaker usually handles the haldi, mehendi and vidaai. Make sure each person has the right playlist, downloaded offline.
- Write timestamps on the running order. For the bride entry, the couple's dance and the vidaai, note the exact second each song should start.
- Mix generations. Every event should include a few classics for the grandparents. The old Rajshri and Yash Raj wedding songs are the safest way to get everyone dancing.
- Check regional traditions. Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and Rajasthani families all have their own wedding songs. Ask the elders which ones they expect to hear.
