The mehendi is the most relaxed event of an Indian wedding and the hardest to soundtrack. It runs in daylight, usually in the afternoon, with the bride sitting still for three hours while everyone else drifts between the henna artists, the chaat counter and the dance floor. The playlist has to work as background for the first hour, as a dholki sing-along in the second, and as a proper dance party by the end, all without the bride being able to get up.
This guide is organised by those moments. Each section covers one phase of the afternoon, and the songs in it are chosen for how they work in a garden or a hall full of women of every age, with the groom's side arriving halfway through. We have kept the traditional mehendi songs that the older guests expect, added the 2024 and 2025 tracks that have earned a place, and left out the club songs that belong at the sangeet. For that evening, our guide to the best sangeet songs covers the running order.
How to Structure a Mehendi Playlist
A mehendi runs three to four hours. The order that works, over and over, is this:
- Bride's entry: one song, chosen by the bride, for the walk to her seat.
- Traditional mehendi songs: the first hour, while the henna artists work. Familiar, mid-tempo, mostly older.
- Dholki and folk: Punjabi folk and ladies' sangeet songs that the aunties sing with a dholki, whether or not you have one.
- Friends' dance block: the bridesmaids' performances and the open floor, once the bride's henna is mostly on.
- Slow songs: romantic tracks for the stretch when the bride cannot move and the photographer is busy.
- Closing: two or three sing-alongs before everyone leaves for the sangeet.
Plan for 40 to 50 songs. Unlike a sangeet, most of them play in full, because nobody is waiting for a beat drop.
Bride's Entry Songs
The mehendi entry is shorter and lighter than the sangeet entry. The bride walks in daylight, often with her friends, so the song should be joyful rather than grand.
- Din Shagna Da (Phillauri, 2017): Jasleen Royal's folk-pop version remains the default bride's entry in North India for every pre-wedding event. If the bride is saving it for the sangeet, pick one of the next three.
Din Shagna Da - Aaj Sajeya (Goldie Sohel, 2021): written for exactly this moment, with lyrics about the bride getting ready. Soft, modern and easy to walk to.
Aaj Sajeya - Mehendi (Dhvani Bhanushali, 2020): a pop song about the mehendi itself. Bright and short, good for a quick entry into a garden.
Mehendi - Madhanya (Rahul Vaidya and Asees Kaur, 2021): the romantic wedding single that became a mehendi favourite because of its gentle, swaying tempo.

Traditional Mehendi Songs
These are the songs the older guests came for. They play while the henna goes on, and most of the room will sing along to all of them.
- Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995): the original and still the one. Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, Jatin-Lalit's tune, and a chorus that every Indian over thirty knows by heart.
Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna - Mehendi Hai Rachnewali (Zubeidaa, 2001): A. R. Rahman's gentle classic, sung by Alka Yagnik. The slowest song in this section and the most beautiful.
Mehendi Hai Rachnewali - Mehndi Mehndi (Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, 2001): Anu Malik's full-scale mehendi production number. Loud, festive and made for a room of relatives.
Mehndi Mehndi - Sajan Sajan Teri Dulhan (Aarzoo, 1999): Alka Yagnik again, with Madhuri Dixit on screen. The lyrics are about the bride being prepared, which is why it has survived at mehendis for 25 years.
Sajan Sajan Teri Dulhan - Sajanji Ghar Aaye (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, 1998): the wedding song from the biggest wedding film of the 1990s. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik.
Sajanji Ghar Aaye - Bole Chudiyan (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, 2001): the first song of the afternoon that gets people up. Play it at the end of this block as the bridge into the folk section.

Dholki and Punjabi Folk Songs
Every mehendi has a point where the aunties take over, and these are their songs. Even without a dholki, a folk block in the middle of the afternoon changes the mood from background music to a celebration.
- Latthe Di Chadar (Punjabi folk): the original ladies' sangeet song, a century old in some form and still sung at every Punjabi mehendi. Any recorded version works.
Latthe Di Chadar - Chitta Kukkad (Neha Bhasin, 2012): the folk song about the bride's hesitation, reworked by Neha Bhasin into the version most DJs now play.
Chitta Kukkad - Laung Gawacha (Nucleya and Avneet Khurmi, 2015): the folk song, given a bass drop. The one track that bridges the aunties and the bridesmaids.
Laung Gawacha - Gud Naal Ishq Mitha (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, 2019): Malkit Singh's 1998 bhangra classic, rebuilt for the film with Navraj Hans and Harshdeep Kaur. Bhangra at a tempo everyone can manage.
Gud Naal Ishq Mitha - Sadi Gali (Tanu Weds Manu, 2011): Lehmber Hussainpuri's track is the sound of a North Indian wedding. It belongs here as much as at the baraat.
Sadi Gali - Navrai Majhi (English Vinglish, 2012): Amit Trivedi's Marathi wedding song, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan with a group of friends. The regional slot, and a lovely one.

Songs for the Friends' Performance and the Open Floor
By the second hour the bride's hands are done and her friends want to dance. The best songs here are the ones with a chorus that non-dancers can fake and a hook that works in daylight.
- Ghodey Pe Sawaar (Qala, 2022): Amit Trivedi's retro waltz, sung by Sireesha Bhagavatula, became the bridesmaids' song of the decade on social media. Easy choreography, vintage look.
Ghodey Pe Sawaar - Kudmayi (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, 2023): a song literally about the engagement. Shahid Mallya on vocals and a tune built for a group of friends walking in together.
Kudmayi - What Jhumka (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, 2023): Arijit Singh and Jonita Gandhi on the modern remake of the Mera Saaya classic. The one song every bridesmaid group performed in 2024 and 2025.
What Jhumka - Sweety Tera Drama (Bareilly Ki Barfi, 2017): a playful, slightly cheeky song made for the bride's sisters to perform at her.
Sweety Tera Drama - Cutiepie (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, 2016): Pritam's mehendi scene song, with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma on screen. Easy, catchy and ideal for a mixed group.
Cutiepie - Morni Banke (Badhaai Ho, 2018): Guru Randhawa and Neha Kakkar. A guaranteed open-floor starter that works for every age group.
Morni Banke - Nachde Ne Saare (Baar Baar Dekho, 2016): Jasleen Royal, Harshdeep Kaur and Siddharth Mahadevan. Fast, bright, and perfect for the final open-floor stretch before the slow block.

The 2024 and 2025 Hits
A mehendi playlist should sound current, and the last two years produced several songs that are already mehendi regulars.
- Soni Soni (Ishq Vishk Rebound, 2024): Darshan Raval and Jonita Gandhi on the breezy pop remake. Light enough for the afternoon.
Soni Soni - Aaj Ki Raat (Stree 2, 2024): Sachin-Jigar's slow-burning dance number sung by Madhubanti Bagchi. Slot it late in the friends' block.
Aaj Ki Raat - Sahiba (Aditya Rikhari, 2025): the independent hit that crossed into weddings and refused to leave. Works as an entry song too.
Sahiba - Tum Ho Toh (Saiyaara, 2025): the romantic track of 2025. Keep it for the slow block, or for the moment the groom's side arrives.
Tum Ho Toh
Slow Songs While the Mehendi Dries
There is always an hour when the bride cannot move, the dancing has paused, and the photographer wants everyone to sit still. These songs fill it without killing the mood.
- Raatan Lambiyan (Shershaah, 2021): Jubin Nautiyal and Asees Kaur. The most played wedding slow song of the 2020s.
Raatan Lambiyan - Tere Vaaste (Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, 2023): Sachin-Jigar's mid-tempo love song. Gentle, hummable and good for the photos.
Tere Vaaste - Nai Jaana (Neha Bhasin, 2020): the song about the bride not wanting to leave, in its most popular recorded version. Expect tears from the bride's mother.
Nai Jaana - Butta Bomma (Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, 2020): Armaan Malik's Telugu hit, which has been a pan-Indian wedding slow song since it went viral. The second regional pick on this list.
Butta Bomma
Closing Songs
Finish with the two songs everyone can sing, then send the guests off to get ready for the evening.
- Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna reprise: yes, play it again. The closing sing-along at a mehendi is this song, and nobody will complain.
- Bole Chudiyan reprise: the alternative closer if the room wants one last dance rather than a sing-along.
Mehendi Playlist Tips from Wedding DJs
- Daylight changes everything. Songs that feel huge in a dark banquet hall feel loud and tiring in an afternoon garden. Keep the tempo lower than you would at the sangeet.
- Save the bangers. Kala Chashma, Gallan Goodiyaan and the Punjabi party block belong at the sangeet. If you play them at the mehendi, the evening has nowhere to go.
- Put the folk block in the middle. Dholki songs after the first hour give the older guests their moment before the friends take over.
- Ask the bride for three songs. Her entry, her favourite slow song and one she wants to dance to once her hands are dry. Build the rest around those.
- Keep the speaker away from the henna artists. They need to hear the bride, and the bride needs three hours of not shouting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular mehendi song?
Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is still the most played mehendi song in India three decades after its release. Among newer songs, Din Shagna Da and What Jhumka are the most requested.
How many songs do I need for a mehendi?
Plan for 40 to 50 songs for a three-to-four-hour event. Most play in full, so the total is lower than for a sangeet.
What is a good bride's entry song for a mehendi?
Din Shagna Da is the default. If the bride wants to save it for the sangeet, Aaj Sajeya, Madhanya and Dhvani Bhanushali's Mehendi are the most popular alternatives in 2026.
Which songs do bridesmaids perform at a mehendi?
Ghodey Pe Sawaar, What Jhumka, Kudmayi and Sweety Tera Drama are the most common bridesmaid performance songs of the last two years. Cutiepie and Morni Banke are the easiest to choreograph for a large group.
Should the mehendi playlist be different from the sangeet playlist?
Yes. The mehendi is in daylight, lower tempo and more traditional, with folk and dholki songs at its heart. The sangeet is the night event where the big dance numbers belong. Overlap of five or six songs between the two is fine.
