"Body to Body" is the opening track of Arirang, the 2026 album by BTS, released on 20 March 2026. It is a three-minute pop rap song that starts out sounding like a machine and finishes with a recording of the Korean folk song "Arirang", and that journey from the futuristic to the traditional is the whole point of it. It is also the song BTS chose to open their comeback concert in Seoul the next day, which tells you how the group thinks of it: as a statement of who they are, and a cue for the crowd.

Who Made Body to Body

The production team is unusually starry even by BTS standards. The track was produced by the Picard Brothers, Diplo, Ryan Tedder and Pdogg, BigHit's long-standing in-house producer. The writing credits run to ten names, among them RM, Suga and J-Hope from the group, Tedder, Diplo, Pdogg and the American artist Teezo Touchdown. It was recorded between July and November 2025 and released by BigHit.

Tedder's name is worth a note: the OneRepublic frontman is one of pop's most prolific songwriters, and his own band's best-known single is the subject of our guide to Counting Stars. Here, though, his pop instincts are kept in check by a beat that is far rougher than anything OneRepublic would release.

How the Song Is Built

The song opens with what critics described as a futuristic, almost mechanical intro, then drops into a clattering hip-hop beat with heavily processed vocals and droning chords underneath. RM, Suga and J-Hope carry the rap verses in Korean, and every member of the group gets a part. The first half is all tension: short phrases, hard edges, very little melody to hold on to.

The second half is where the song earns its place at the top of the album. Traditional Korean music starts to seep in, most clearly in the bridge, and in the coda the beat makes room for a sampled performance of "Arirang". The sample comes from a 2007 KBS television special, Chuseok Special Folk Song Festival, with the folk song sung by Kang Hyo-ju, Lee Na-hyeon, Ha Ji-a and Shin Su-jeong. Using an archival recording rather than re-recording the melody with a session singer is a smart choice: it sounds like a real voice from a real broadcast, and it gives the album title a weight that a slick re-recording would not.

Reviewers reached for a wide range of comparisons, from mid-2000s Justin Timberlake to Psy and the Prodigy's "Firestarter" era. None of them quite fits, which is a fair sign that the song has its own identity.

Why It Works as an Opener

  • It sets up the album's theme. An album called Arirang could easily have leaned on nostalgia. "Body to Body" instead treats the folk song as something that belongs in a modern hip-hop track, which is how the rest of the album approaches Korean identity too. The Korea Times put it well when it said the reworked motif comes across as iconic rather than nostalgic.
  • It is built for a crowd. The title and the structure both point to live performance, and The Hollywood Reporter called it the perfect concert opener. The long build and the release into a melody that every Korean listener knows is a stadium moment written into a studio track.
  • It gives the rappers room. RM, Suga and J-Hope set the tone of the song with their verses. The Guardian noted that the three of them sound as if they are having a lot of fun.

The Live Debut at Gwanghwamun

BTS opened BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang, the concert in Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on 21 March 2026 that was streamed on Netflix, with "Body to Body". According to Netflix's own recap of the show, the members walked out flanked by dancers, and in the later part of the song traditional musicians and singers in Joseon-era hanbok performed the "Arirang" section live. It is the clearest demonstration of what the song is for: a modern pop act and a centuries-old song sharing one stage.

Chart Performance

"Body to Body" was not released as the album's lead single (that was "SWIM"), but it charted strongly worldwide on album streams alone. Its peaks included:

  • Number 2 on the Billboard Global 200.
  • Number 4 on South Korea's Circle chart and number 3 on the Billboard South Korea Hot 100.
  • Number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 20 in Canada, where it was certified Gold.
  • Number 28 in the UK, number 19 in Germany and number 26 in Australia.
  • Number 2 on the India International chart, a reminder of how large BTS's Indian audience has become.

For context, here is the album's lead single, which arrived with a full music video:

  • SWIM (Arirang, 2026): the lead single from the album, with a music video starring the actress Lili Reinhart. A brighter and more melodic counterpart to "Body to Body".

Our Verdict

"Body to Body" is not the most immediate song on Arirang, and on first listen the opening minute can feel cold. Stay with it. The payoff, when the beat gives way to the folk song, is one of the best moments in BTS's catalogue, and it explains the album in three minutes. As a piece of pop production it is bold. As a statement from a group returning after a four-year break, it is exactly right.
